Apples and Oranges: Pricing on a Per-Load Basis

Over the past several months, we’ve noticed laundry detergent manufacturers change the fine print on their products to address the number of loads customers obtain from each bottle. What’s easy to overlook is that these brands typically give a range of loads per jug, which we think is misleading. Read more…

The Berry Bubble

I am Jamie Gold, the other owner and founder of Berryplus.  Since we launched quietly in a few select places over the past month, we have been grateful for the outpouring of comments, suggestions and praise about our soap.  Truth be known, not all of the comments we’ve received have been positive or even nice, but the vast majority have been, so we continue to feel encouraged about what we are trying to accomplish. What is Berryplus?

Well, let’s actually take a few steps back. It all started with a problem, and that problem was laundry.  Only a very rare specimen could ever profess to enjoying doing laundry, and we totally get that.  Look up the word “inconvenience” in a dictionary, and chances are there’s a pile of dirty laundry next to it.  Or at least there should be.  And having spent more than twenty years in the garment care business, it’s something that had been weighing on my mind more and more. So I wrangled my partner Jamie and we started taking a critical look at the entire process from start to finish.  And we’re not just talking about rinse to spin. I mean finding answers to two important questions: “What makes laundry such a chore, and how can we make it better?” This seemed like a simple question, but it’s much more complicated once you start digging.  Laundry creates a physical, mental, and environmental strain with every load. Physical, because on top of all your clothes, you have to carry around gallons of heavy chemical goop.  Mental, because of all the garment care tags you have to read, the water temperatures you have to pick, and the measuring of detergent you have to perform to avoid ruining your wardrobe.  And environmental, because when you stop to look at just how much liquid and energy we use to keep clothes clean, the numbers really start to stack up. Which is why we set out to find a silver bullet. And it turns out, like most good things, it comes from a tree. Soapberries have been used for thousands of years by people around the world who discovered that when wet, they give one powerful clean. That’s because locked inside is a natural surfactant called saponin, one of the best on earth. Just to give you an idea, five tiny berries are good enough for two or three loads. Somehow, the best solutions are always old ones.
